The group's main objection to weight loss programs that are high in fat is that they are composed of foods, particularly animal products that may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, kidney problems and diabetes complications. Medical and scientific research has proceeded greatly since the Atkins program came to the market.

The Zone diet is used by Olympic athletes, medical doctors and professional sports teams. The zone diet has been tested in clinical studies and has proven to be more effective than the conventional high carbohydrate, low fat diets.

The Scarsdale diet was developed by Dr. Herman Tarnower. The Scarsdale diet is similar to other popular low carbohydrate fad diets, but it also incorporates grapefruit and some other carbohydrate foods.

The idea of the Scarsdale diet is to lose up to one pound per day by following a low-carbohydrate plan based on chemical reactions rather than portion control.

Snacking is not allowed on the Scarsdale weight loss programs, and meals consist of limited amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables with unlimited amounts of protein. The strict meal plan must be followed exactly, which is low in carbohydrate and many vitamins and minerals. Herbal appetite suppressants are also encouraged on the Scarsdale diet.

We do not recommend weight loss programs like the Scarsdale Diet. They simply promote extreme calorie restrictions beyond what is healthy. Also, their recommendations about taking herbal supplements and increasing many vitamins and minerals is not backed by good scientific evidence.

Popular diets: The Southbeach Diet

A low Carb diet that doesn't restrict carbohydrates to the level of other low Carb diets, like Atkins. Beyond that, the Southbeach Diet is very similar in its design when compared to other low Carb diets.

Dieters tend not to enter an induction phase but do experience low levels of ketosis for longer periods of time. In many cases, this constant low level of ketosis is not measurable using standard methods (urine dip sticks).

In the short run, dieters do lose significant weight. But like all low Carb diets, this initial weight loss is often too much and too fast. This is the perfect set up for diet shock and, ultimately, weight regain.

Popular diets: The GI Diet

A diet plan very similar to Sugar Busters. However, it is slightly more sophisticated than Sugar Busters, as it attempts to utilize the Glycemic Index and, the more accurate, Insulin Index.

The older method for measuring a food's effect on insulin was to measure glucose levels soon after eating. It was theorized, only partially correct, that if a certain food increased glucose, it would also increase insulin.

If you remember, insulin is the "store" fat hormone.

That particular food was then assigned a Glycemic Index score. The higher the Glycemic Index score, the greater the food's influence on raising insulin levels and possibly the greater influence on causing you to store fat.

However, a more accurate measure of insulin levels after eating is the Insulin Index score. Not widely available yet, it directly measures a certain food's effect on raising insulin.

This is preferred because recent studies have indicated that some foods many score high on the Glycemic Index but low on the Insulin Index. The details are still being worked out.

The GI Diet, from our understanding, is attempting to use the Insulin Index score more than the Glycemic Index score.

Overall, the GI Diet is safe and effective in helping dieters lose weight.
