There is a good reason for your confusion (NOT to say it’s the only reason).
What is it? The Unregulated Wellness Industry.
Why do we get so angry about prescription drug safety yet never think twice about the safety of unregulated drugs? Safety records aren’t officially kept for vitamins, supplements, or herbal medicines. “Officially” refers to an industry wide standardization for collecting, recording, and notifying appropriate government agencies when an adverse event occurs.
Please, don’t miss understand me. I strongly believe in some Wellness products. I also believe Western Medicine should be more open to other medicinal possibilities. But belief is not scientific evidence.
Anecdotal evidence, case studies, tradition–these are not scientific either. Interesting? Yes. Solid proof? No.
When a cause-effect relationship is identified, the next step is to test it. This does not mean pointing out that it has a 1000 year history. Great! This sounds like a true winner. Let’s test it.
This is when everything gets messy. Some Western European countries have opened agencies to handle “alternative” medicines. The agencies investigate things like cultural tradition, years of use, and clinical evidence to develop a safety profile. A more formal reporting of adverse events is also initiated.
Other countries, not the United States, have done nothing. The U.S. funds some alternative medicine research, mainly through the N.I.H. (National Institute of Health), to better understand and classify “alternative” therapies. It’s a start. Where has this left us? With weight loss confusion.
There is conflicting weight loss information because there is conflicting data. There is conflicting data because there are not enough well designed large studies to draw any significant conclusion.

- Replace saturated fats with mono unsaturated fats.
- Decrease fat intake and increase protein.
- Eat a slightly higher percent of animal (casein)protein.
- Cut sugars by 2/3, at least.
- Eat more fiber and drink more water.
- Eat the same amount per day spread over 4-5 meals.
- Adopt the good habits of a thin and toned person.
- If your hungry, eat.
- If you really don’t want to eat, brush your teeth to lower your appetite.
- Walk everyday for 40 minutes. Add ankle weights.
- Take your dog for a walk, maybe play fetch (he’s been waiting).
- Teach someone else how to lose weight.
- Activate your life!
