To begin with, we don’t recommend losing weight fast. People always ask us about the fastest way to lose weight, and while it’s tempting to want to lose weight quickly, it’s just not the best way to do it. You’ll lose muscle instead of fat, you’ll lose water instead of fat, it’s hard on the heart, you’ll gain the weight back… it’s just not healthy. And yet, we know people will try losing weight fast anyway.
The Fastest Way to Lose Weight
So we have researched the various “fast diets” to find one which is safest and most effective. Here is the best we have found:
Step one: One week before you actually begin your diet, drink a protein shake supplement every day. Don’t make any other changes to your diet.
Step two: When losing weight fast, you should also take a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement to make sure your body gets all the nutrients it needs.
Step three: Begin an exercise program. A good beginning is to start with stretching the major muscle groups.
Step four: One week later, when it’s time to begin your diet, decrease the number of calories that you eat by 500 per day. You can do this by replacing a meal with the protein shake, if you like. You shouldn’t feel hungry by doing this. Drink plenty of water, too.
Step five: Weigh yourself weekly. You should not lose more than four pounds per week. Yes, we know many people want to lose more than that, faster than that. But it’s just not safe. There is no diet we can recommend for it. We normally recommend two pounds per week; four pounds is the fastest way to lose weight safely that we can recommend here.
On this diet, you’ll lose some muscle, but mostly fat. The protein shake helps prevent muscle loss, because protein helps build muscle. The protein shake, the multi-vitamin/mineral supplement, and the fact that you’re only cutting 500 calories from your diet makes this diet easier on your heart than many other fast diets. It is the safest and most effective of the fastest way to lose weight that we have found.
Other Fast Diets
You may want to search for other fast diets. Here are some things to consider when evaluating their safety and effectiveness:
- Avoid diets that focus on one particular food, such as cabbage or grapefruit.
- Avoid diets that eliminate one food group, such as carbohydrates.
- Avoid diets that make outrages claims, such as lose 10 pounds in one week – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Be wary of diets that require the use of a weight loss supplement. There is a place for weight loss supplements, but diets that involve the use of “magic pills” often don’t work – especially if all you have to do is take the pill and the fat is supposed to “melt away.” The truth is, you’ll have to watch what you eat and exercise in order to lose weight. There are no “magic pills.”
- Be wary of diets that make claims they don’t back up with solid information. For instance, if they tell you that you’ll lose weight by eating a particular food or taking a particular herbal supplement but don’t explain why, be cautious. They should be able to explain why that is the fastest way to lose weight – if it really is.
