Water and Weight Loss
An isotonic drink, like half water and half gatorade, is more hydrating than water alone. Isotonic means that the fluid you drink will not disrupt normal water balance, unlike fluids that are hypertonic or hypotonic.
- Hypotonic Fluids have less salt than the tissues surrounding blood vessels. This pulls water into the tissues and can decrease hydration.
- Isotonic Fluids have the same amount of salt than the tissues surrounding blood vessels. This causes no net movement of water, supporting a normal water balance.
- Hypertonic Fluids have more salt than the tissues surrounding blood vessels. This pulls water into the bloodstream causing water loss with excess urination.
A 50:50 mix of water and gatorade is isotonic and will not disrupt normal water balance, keeping you hydrated. Try it!
