What is the American diabetic diet?

The recommended American diabetic association diet plan is a healthful diet for any person, whether or not they have diabetes. It is a diet low in fat and sugar. The American diabetic diet relies heavily on fresh foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables, and also whole-grain foods. Processed foods are avoided as much as possible.

The American diabetic association diet includes foods from all the food groups. The four main food groups are:

    Fruits and vegetables. It is recommended that all people eat at least five servings from this food group per day.

    Dairy. Eggs are generally considered a dairy product. Other dairy products include milk, yogurt, cheese, and ice cream. Use skim milk and low fat yogurt if you need to lose weight.

Make sure you read food labels to determine how much constitutes a serving size. Eating too large a portion will defeat the purpose.

What about sweets?
