Acid Reflux Diet

Using an effective acid reflux diet is very important. Acid Reflux, formally called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD, damages the esophagus and can lead to serious conditions like cancer.

The acid reflux diet is designed to minimize acid production and the effects on the lower esophageal schincter.

Acid Reflux Disease Diet

A specialized diet is neccessary for people diagnosed with acid reflux disease. However, it's not really a diet but instead is a list of foods that are safe to consume and a list of foods to avoid.

General Recommendations

  • Stop using tobacco, nicotine weakens the lower esophagus.

  • Avoid chewing gum and hard candy, they increase the amount of swallowed air which, in turn, leads to belching and reflux.

  • Do not lie down immediately after eating.

  • Avoid late evening snacks.

  • Avoid tight clothing and bending over after eating.

  • Eat small portions of food and snacks.

  • Lose weight, obesity leads to increased reflux.

  • Elevate the head of the bed six to eight inches to prevent reflux when sleeping.

  • Avoid the following food:
    -fatty or fried foods
    -peppermint and spearmint
    -whole milk
    -creamed foods or soups
    -most fast foods
    -citrus fruits and juices
    -coffee (regular and decaffeinated)
    -caffeinated soft drinks
    -other caffeinated beverages

Recommended menu for the acid reflux diet

  • Milk or Milk Products
    -1% or 2% low-fat milk, low-fat or fat-free yogurt

  • Vegetables
    -vegetables are OK
    -no creamy servings for the acid reflux disease diet

  • Fruits
    -apples, berries, melons, bananas, peaches, pears
    -avoid citrus such as oranges, grapefruit, pineapple

  • Breads & grains
    -all those made with low-fat content are OK
    -any prepared with whole milk or high-fat should be avoided

  • Meat, meat substitutes
    -low-fat meat, chicken, fish, turkey
    -avoid cold cuts, sausage, bacon, fatty meat, chicken fat/skin

  • Fat, oils
    -none or small amounts are recommended on the acid reflux disease diet

  • Sweets & desserts
    -all items made with no or low fat (less than 3 g fat/serving)
    -avoid chocolate and desserts made with oils and/or fats

  • Beverages
    -decaffeinated, non-mint herbal tea; juices (except citrus); water
    -avoid alcohol, coffee, carbonated beverages, and tea

  • Soups
    -fat-free or low-fat soups are best on an acid reflux disease diet
    -avoid creamy servings

A Medical Weight Loss Plan

The best medical weight loss plan for those following the acid reflux diet is calorie restriction and exercise.

Follow the recommendations listed above, cut your total caloric intake and begin exercising. Usually cutting calories by 250-550 per day will result in 2 pounds of weight loss per week for an average dieter.
